-لقد شقي هذا الكتاب، مؤخرا بذلك النوع منالتصديق الساذج لدى بعض القراء، بل ولدى المجلات التي تفهم الأمور فهما حرفيا.فاستاء بعضهم استياء فظيعا لا مزيد بعده لمستزيد، من تصويرنا نموذجا يبلغ منالابتعاد عن الأخلاق ما بلغه (( بطل من هذا الزمان )) ؛ وقال آخرون، في كثير منالرقة والرهافة، لا شك أن المؤلف قد رسم صورة نفسه، وصورة من يعرف من الناس ... ياله من اتهام قديم تافه !ان كل شيء ليتجدد في روسيا ، الا هذه البلاهات.وما اعسر ان تنجو حكاية من الحكايات، مهماتغرق في الخيال، من اتهامها بانها ارادت ان تسئ الى شخص بعينه. أيهاالقراء الأعزة ان (( بطل من هذا الزمان )) لهو صورة حقا ، ولكنه ليس صورة رجلواحد. انه صورة تضم رذائل جيلنا كله، وقد بلغت كمال التفتح . قد تقولون لي مرةأخرى : ما من انسان يمكن أن يبلغ هذا المبلغ من الفساد.وجوابي : ترى لماذا تصدقون وجود جميع فجرة المآسيوالروايات الرومنسية ، ثم لا تصدقون بأن شخصاا مثل بتشورين يمكن أن يكون مستمداالواقع ؟ وكيف تطيب لكم اخيلة افظع وارهب، ثم لا تلقى منكم صورة هذا الشخص ، حتىولو كانت خيالا وقبولا ورضى ؟ ترى ألا يرجع ذلك إلى أن هذه الصورة أصدق مما تحبون؟ .. وربقائل منكم يقول: ان الاخلاق لا تجنى من ذلك خيرا ؛ فعلى رسلكم. لقد طالما غذىالناس بالحلوى حتى فسدت معدهم. وينبغي أن يتناولوا الآن عقاقير مرة وحقائقلاذعة. ولا تظنوا مع ذلك أن مؤلف هذا الكتاب قد دار في خلده يوما في خلده يوما ذلكالحلم الدعى ، وهو أن يقيم نفسه وصيا على الناس يصلح ما فسد من أخلاقهم. وقاناالله شر الادعاء العريض. وانما أحببت على سبيل التفكه أن أصور انسان هذاالعصر، كما فهمته، وكما اتفق لي ان لقيته في كثير جدا من الأحيان، لسوء طالعيولسوء طالعكم. وحسبي ان اشير إلى الداء أما وسائل البرء فعلمها عند الله.-
