واستيقظت على صوت المحقق وهو يهتف بى "هو.. اصح!" فرفعت إليه عينى مرتجفا وعدت رويدا رويدا إلى الشعور بما حولى . قال الرجل: إنى أسألك إلم تصارحك زوجك بكراهيتها للحبل؟ ألم تفض إليك برغبتها فى إجهاض نفسها؟
إنى أسألك ألم تصارحك زوجك بكراهيتها للحبل؟ للحبل تفض إليك برغبتها فى إجهاض نفسها؟
واسترقت من الدكتور أمين نظرة سريعة، وقلت لنفسى إنه يعلم السر كله من بادئ الأمر، ولعله يعلم أضعاف ما أعلم، فعز على أن أكذب وأن أعرض نفسى لإهانة جديدة، وتمتمت قائلا:
- كلا..
- أكنت تراها مسرورة بحبلها؟
فقلت فى غير مبالاة وقنوط:
- لم أعمل أنها كانت حبلى إلا هذه الساعة!
فارتفع حاجبا المحقق فوق عويناته، وثبته على عينيه وهو يقدح فكره ثم سألنى:
- كيف تعلل إخفاءها الأمر عنك؟
لشد ما زلزلنى هذا السؤال! إنها كلمة واحدة ثم يصبح سرى نادرة المتندرين. إن مشاعر الحقد والانتقام تستفزنى جميعا إلى نشر هذا السر الدفين كى أهتك سر الآئمة وأنزل انتقامى بالمجرم. أريد أن أقول إنه لم يكن فى حياتنا ما يدعو إلى الحبل ليضع المحقق يده القاسية على الفاسق. ولشد ما نازعتنى نفسى إلى ذلك، وأوشكت الكلمات أن تثب إلى طرفى لسانى. بيد أننى لم أنبس بكلمة، وحل بى شلل عام لا أدرى ما كنهه. هل يمكن أن يكون للخجل أثر حتى فى مثل هذا الحال؟.. هل يمكن أن تفوق رغبتى فى التستر على عجزى تحرقى إلى الانتقال؟ لم أستطع التفوه بالكلمة الفاصلة، وكلما مرت ثانية ازددت عجزا ونكوصا، ثم تمتمت قائلا وأنا ألهث:
- لا أدرى..
وما أدى إلا والدكتور ينتفض واقفا ثم يتراجع خطوتين شابكا ذراعيه على صدره فى تحد وكبرياء وغطرسة! ويقول للمحقق بثبات وعجرفة:
تسأله عما لا يدرى، إنها لم تكن زوجه إلا رسميا فحسب، وإنى أن أنا المسئول عن كل شئ من البداية إلى النهاية.
