غادر الرجال السفينة وخلا الملك إلى نفسه، وكان على توافر دواعي الابتهاج له كئيباً ضيق الصدر، لقد كلل كفاحه بالفوز المبين وجثا له عدوه الجبار، ومن الغد يحمل أبو فيس متاعه ويفر إلى الصحراء التي جاء منها قومه... فما باله لا يفرح ولا يبتهج؟ أو ما بال فرحه ليس صافياً وابتهاجه ليس كاملاً؟... لقد حملت الساعة الخطيرة، ساعة الوداع إلى الأبد... كان قبل تلك الساعة يائساً حقاً، ولكنها كانت هناك في السفينة الصغيرة.
فماذا يفعل غداً إذا رجع إلى قصر طيبة وحملت هي إلى بطن الصحراء المجهولة؟ أيتركها تذهب دون أن يتزود منها بنظرة وداع؟" هكذا يمزج نجيب محفوظ قصة كفاح أهل طيبة بقصة الملك أحمس العاطفية... قصة تلوح في ثناياها عاطفة صادقة، فالبطل أحمس رغم حصوله على النصر لم تغب عن ذهنه صورة تلك الأميرة القادمة من الصحراء والتي ظلت ملامحها محفورة في قلبه كأول يوم رآها فيه على ظهر السفينة الفرعونية... قصة كفاح... وقصة حب تموج أحداثهما على صفحات كفاح طيبة التي سطرت شجاعة أهلها وشجاعة ملكها... لكن هذا لم يلغ اتقاد العاطفة الصادقة التي ضحى بها الملك في سبيل طيبة.
ونجيب محفوظ يسطر لهذه الحكاية وكأنه القادم من خلف الزمان والذي كان واحداً من أهل طيبة.. والذي شهد مولد هذه العاطفة... وعذاباتها... وغيابها في سبيل الوطن.
