يوسف أبو رية من مواليد يناير 1955 بمركز ههيا بمحافظة الشرقية وحصل على شهادته الجامعية في الاعلام من جامعة القاهرة وعمل في مركز البحوث كمدير عام.
وكان امينا عاما لصندوق رابطة القلم المصرية طوال الاعوام الـ 13 الاخيرة من حياته.كما شارك في تظاهرات حركة كفاية المعارضة لاعادة انتخاب الرئيس المصري محمد حسني مبارك.
وللراحل سبع مجموعات قصصية اولها "الضحى العالمي" التي نشرت في 1985. ومن مجموعاته ايضا "طلل النار" و"شتاء العري" و"عكس الريح" و"ترنيمة الدار".
كما الف خمس روايات هي "ليلة عرس" و"صمت الطواحين" و"عطش الصبار" و"الجزيرة البيضاء" و"تل الهوى"، واربعة كتب للاطفال هي "خبز الصغار" و"اسد السرك" و"الايام الاخيرة للجمل" و"طفولة الكلمات".
