إن نقد العقل جزء أساسي وأولي في كل مشروع للنهضة، ولكن النهضة العربية الحديثة جرت فيها الأمور على غير هذا المجرى، وإلى هذا العامل يحيل الدكتور محمد عابد الجابري سبب تعثر هذه النهضة. لذا كان كتابه هذا تكوين العقل العربي طريقاً في سبيل نقد هذا العقل، وذلك بهدف مراجعة شاملة لآلية العقل العربي وللوقوف على آلياته ومفاهيمه وتصوراته ورؤاه على امتداد مئة عام، وذلك من خلال عملية نقد كان رائدها التحرر من إسار القراءات السائدة لاستنئناف النظر في معطيات الثقافة العربية الإسلامية بمختلف فروعها دون التقيد بوجهات النظر السائدة.
وقد انقسم بحثه هذا إلى جزءين منفصلين ولكن متكاملين جزء تناول "تكوين العقل العربي"، والجزء الثاني تناول تحليل بنية العقل العربي. وغاية الدكتور الجابري من كل ذلك محاولة في سبيل المساهمة ومن جديد في بناء نهضة بعقل ناهض.
