رغم تجذّر مفهوم الوالدية في أدبيات الثقافة والمجتمع، إلاّ أنّه لم يُطرح كمفهوم أكاديمي تدور حوله الدّراسات إلاّ في أواخر القرن العشرين، وذلك في إطار ما شهدته الأسرة من تطوّر في تركيبتها ووظيفتها ودورها في حماية النّشء والمسؤولية المنوطة لها، ومن أهمّ المفاهيم المتعلّقة بالوالدية في هذا السياق، مفهوم المرافقة الذي يمتدّ في توقيعاته إلى كثير من الأبعاد الإنسانيّة. ويتوجّه البحث هنا، ضمن هذه التوقيعات إلى مسألة المرافقة الوالدية باعتبار دورها في التأسيس لجودة الحياة العائليّة من جهة، والتربية على الاختيار من جهة أخرى. وإذا كان مقام جودة الحياة العائليّة يمتدّ في أبعاده إلى مستويات متنوّعة اقتصادية وسياسيّة وثقافيّة يتفاعل معها تأثّرا وتأثيرا، فإنّ مقام التربية على الاختيار يكاد يستقرّ في جلّ أبعاده داخل بوتقة الوالديّة، أين تنصهر شخصيات الأبناء منذ التّنشئة الأولى
وللمرافقة الوالدية امتدادات وأبعاد متنوّعة، من بينها بعد التربية على الاختيار، ويتجسّد هنا في الاشتغال على مسألة اختيار المسالك والشعب في التّوجيه المدرسي والجامعي، باعتبارها مسألة عمليّة ميدانية تعبّر صراحة عن ممارسة فعل الاختيار (بوعي أو بلا وعي) وما يمكن أن تحمله هذه الممارسة من آثار إيجابية على الفرد والمجموعة في علاقته بنفسه وفي علاقته بالآخرين. ونظرا لما تكتسبه عملية التربية على الاختيار من نجاعة، فإنّ تناولها بالبحث والنّظر أصبح من متطلّبات المساهمة في الارتقاء بالشأن التربوي خاصّة، والشأن الاجتماعي عامّة.
