"مدار السرطان" هي أروع ما كتبه "هنري ميللر" عن المجتمع الباريسي خلال حياته في أوربا، فالعالم الذي تصوره هذه الرواية باريس بامتياز، غير أنه شديد البعد عن مجتمع المظفرين والمتفائلين المترفين هذا، وهو يتكون من اناس منبوذين ورسامين وكتاب مزيفين، وهامشيين وطفيليين يعيشون في أطراف المدينة دون أن يشاركوا في اي احتفال أو مناسبة، بيد أنهم يتشاجرون على فضالته، هم منفيون لم يتجذروا في باريس وظلوا يعيشون في وضع ثقافي متذبذب يكتنفه الغموض. تتكون جغرافيته من مواخير وحانات ونزل مشبوهة وبيوت قذرة ومطاعم بائسة وحدائق وساحات وشوارع تجتذب المتشردين. ولكي لا يهلك الإنسان في هذا البلد القاس تصبح كل الأعمال والوسائل مقبولة، بداية من العمل الشاق، وصولاً إلى الإفتراض من الأصدقاء، والتشبه بالمحتالين واللامبالاة والسلبية. لقد كان ميللر يرى إن هذه الرواية: كانت انفتاح باب.. وعلى اثرها دخلت إلى حقيقة العالم، لكن قبلها كنت لا ازال سجيناً".
