في روايته «صقر إسبارطة» يسرد الكاتب كون إيغلدن قصة ملك يُفاضل بين ولديه، ويوغر صدر أخ على أخيه، يموت الملك، ويحظى أحدهما بالعرش ويقرر تنفيذ وصية أبيه، فتتدخل الأم وتنقذ روح الآخر.
يحشدان الجيوش، وينفقان من العملات الذهبية ما يعادل الجبال، يلتحم الجيشان، وعندما يوشك أحد الأخوين على قتل الآخر، يأتيه الموت من حيث لا يدري... ففي مغامرة خطرة تقدّم أحد الأخوين ومرافقه الشخصي إلى قلب جيش أخيه وضربه وكاد يقتله، قبل أن يصيبه رمحٌ ويرديه أرضاً.
يصبح الجيش بلا قائد، ويُعلن المنتصر هدنة، ويستدرج قادةً بواسل جلاميد كالصخور ويقتلهم، وتستمر الحكاية في صفحات مجيدة من نضال قل نظيره. وفي خضم كل ذلك نتعرف على حبيبة فضّلت الوليد على الوليف، ولكن عندما يدق ناقوس الخطر ويستنجد الوليف بحبيبته تفتحُ خزائن زوجها لتمد وليفها بصناديق الذهب ليمول حربه.
«صقر إسبارطة» ملحمة تاريخية عن حدث استثنائي في تاريخ اليونان والفرس، إنها رواية عن رجال يصبح لديهم مرّ الموت بشرف وشموخ عذباً كالماء الرقراق وحلواً بطعم العسل.

كون إيغلدن، من مواليد 24 فبراير 1971، هو مؤلف بريطاني يؤلف الروايات الخيالية التاريخية. من أبرز مؤلفاته: سلسلة الإمبراطور وسلسلة الفاتح. شارك أيضاً في تأليف كتاب Dangerous Book للأولاد مع شقيقه هال إيغلدن. في عام 2007، أصبح إيغلدن أول شخص يتصدر الرموز الخيالية وغير الخيالية في المملكة المتحدة في نفس الوقت.
