تقوم فكرة هذا الكتاب "أصل العمل الفني" على مسألة التساؤل عن الوجود، وهو في رأي هايدغر تساؤل يختزل في كلمة واحدة، في التساؤل عن معنى فعل "كان"، معنى الكينونة. إننا نقول "البحر يكون أزرق" و"أنا (أكون) فرحان". وهذا لا يختلف عن قولنا: كل من هذا الأمر وذاك هو (يكون) كذا وكذا.
فما معنى يكون في واقع الأمر؟ يرى هايوغر أن علينا أن نجتهد بفعالية للتغلب على أحكامنا المسبقة، إذا نحن أردنا أن نقترب بنزاهة من هذه المسألة. هذا وذاك موجودان. ما الذي يجعلهما إذن يكونان هذا الذي يكونانه؟ ترى ما يكونان؟ ولنضع سؤالاً عاماً: ما هي كينونة الموجودين؟ بعبارة أخرى: ما الذي يجعل شيئاً (يكون هكذا أو هكذا) موجوداً؟ وهنا يرى هايدغر أن الإنسان لا يستطيع أن يفهم كينونته إلا من خلال آنيته، إلا من خلال ذاته الموجودة. ذلك أنه يدرك في كينونته أنه موجود وأن له طبيعة ذاتية تساعده على التعبير عن ذاته بطرق مختلفة، وكينونته هذه إنما هي في الوقت نفسه دافعه إلى فهم الكينونة الكونية.
إن السؤال عن أصل العمل الفني يصبح سؤالاً عن جوهر الفن. ولما كان الجواب عما إذا كان الفن فنا أو كيف يكون فنا على وجه العموم، سيظل معلقاً، فإننا سنحاول العثور على جوهر الفن هناك حيث يسود الفن على وجهه الصحيح. الفن يحيا في العمل-الفني، ولكن ما هو العمل الفني وكيف يكون؟
