روائي فرنسي، درس الحقوق، ولكنه عكف على التأليف الأدبي. أصيب بمرض عصبي جعله يمكث طويلاً في كرواسيه. كان أول مؤلف مشهور له: « التربية العاطفية » (1843 – 1845)، ثم « مدام بوفاري » 1857 التي تمتاز بواقعيتها وروعة أسلوبها، والتي أثارت قضية الأدب المكشوف. ثم تابع تأليف رواياته المشهورة، منها: « سالامبو » 1862، و« تجربة القديس أنطونيوس » 1874، ويعتبر فلوبير مثلاً أعلى للكاتب الموضوعي، الذي يكتب بأسلوب دقيق، ويختار اللفظ المناسب والعبارة الملاءمة.

التربية العاطفية تسجل وقائع وأحداث العام 1848، حيث تتمثل فيها الروح التي ألهبت ثورة شباط، بواسطة ثوار فاعلين أصحاب عنف، حيث يقدم خلو بين نماذج ثلاثة للثوار ديلورييه، والساخط والطموح الذي يريد تأكيد حضوره وحضور طبقته، سينيكال، وهو ثائر لحاجة إلى السيطرة ولشهوة إلى العدالة، وأخيراً الثائر الحقيقي في 1848، ديسردييه، وهو الذي يقدم الصورة الندية والجميلة، فهو ثائر بحماسة لجملة الضعفاء والمقهورين.
ولقد نجح فلوبير في أن يجمع في هذه الرواية حصيلة عصره، وروايته هذه كانت تتطلب درجة رفيعة من الثقافة. وقد أثارت حماسة كبيرة، كما أثارت النقد لكونها لم تبدد أبداً أوهام الإمبراطورية رغم أنها رسمت لوحة لجيل بكامله. يقول فلوبير في رسالة له: "أريد أن أكتب التاريخ الأدبي لأبناء جيلي، أو بقول أصح (التاريخ العاطفي) لهذا الجيل، أنه كتاب وشهوة، ولكنها الشهوة التي تصادفها في عصرنا، وهي شهوة ساكنة هادئة".
وفي الرواية يبدو فريدريك مورو حتماً لسيرة فلوبير الذاتية أما السيدة أرنو فلقد جسد فيها فلوبير حب حياته الأكبر، أما السيد دمبروز فهو شخصية واقعية صاحبها رجل أعمال ونائب.
