عندما لا يتقبل أى إنسان نظرية التطور الأحيائى، فإن ذلك يكون بدافع الغرور وجنون العظمة، ولكى يؤكد لذاته صحة ما يذهب إليه تفكيره، من تجاهل رؤية وفهم ما يدور حوله، فإنه يلتمس المعونة مما تجمع لديه، فى غضون القرون القليلة السابقة، من تراث ومعتقدات وأساطير، ويقنع نفسه بصوابها بالرغم من غموضها، ويشيح بنظره عن الحقائق بالرغم من وضوحها..
والصنف الإنسانى فى مرتبته الحالية، فى التكوين التعضوى الأرضى، بمثابة الزهيرات الرائعة التلوين، المنتثرة على الغصينات الطرفية، الكاسية بشجرة باسقة، فى موسم الربيع. فبالرغم من جمالها وكثرتها، التى تغطى على كل ما تحمله الشجرة، ابتداء من جذورها، إلى جذعها، وفروعها، وأوراقها، فإنها ترى نفسها، على أساس أنها الجزء الرئيسى، وربما الوحيد، الذى يستحق الذكر فى الشجرة. وترى باقى الأجزاء، على أساس أنها أقل مرتبة منها بكثير، وأن كل ما يدور من عمليات حيوية فى الشجرة، هو من أجلها، على أساس أنها أشياء غريبة ومتدنية، ولا تعترف بأن من شأن الأخيرة أن تتفتح، إلى زهيرات يافعة مماثلة لها، وتنظر إلى الأشواك المحيطة بها، باستنكار ولا تقر بجدواها فى توفير الحماية لها ولغيرها، بل وتنظر إلى الفروع والأغصان، التى تقوم بحملها بازدراء، ولا تستوعب أنها قد انبثقت عنها، وأنها التى توفر لها سبل الإعاشة. وهذا هو الحال بالضبط مع الكائن الإنسانى، الذى يظن أن الأرض وما عليها مخلوقة من أجله، وبما أنها هى المستقر له، فإنها مركز الكون، وغاب عن ذهنه أنه بمثابة تزهير ربيعى عابر، وأن أقدم تاريخ له على سطح الأرض، لا يتعدى ربع مليون سنة، بينما يمتد عمر الكائنات الحية المتعضية، إلى ما يقارب أربعة بلايين، وعمر الأرض نفسها يتعدى خمسة بلايينن والكون ما يربو على خمسة عشر بليوناً.
وما قام به "جاليليو جاليلى" منذ نصف الألفية من كسر معتقد أن الأرض هى مركز الكون، يماثل ما قام به داروين منذ قرن ونصف فى كسر المعتقد الخاص بتفرد الكائن الإنسانى، وقطع ارتباطاته العرقية مع سائر الكائنات الحية.
