منذ أكثر من مائة عاماً كتب جان جاك روسو الجولة العاشرة من "احلام يقظة جوال منفرد" ولم يقدر له أن يكملها. كان ذلك فى الثانى عشر من إبريل من عام 1778. فى يوم "عيد الفصح المزهر"... أى قبل وفاته بما يقل عن ثلاثة شهور إذ أنه قضى فى الثانى من شهر يوليو من العام نفسه.
هذه الجولات إذن هى مؤلفه الأخير و اخر ماسجل من خواطر وخلجات سجلها إبتداء من ربيع عام 1776, كتب الأربعة الأولى منها فى عامى 1776 و 1777 و كتب الأربعة التالية فى عام 1777, وكتب الجولتين الأخيرتين فيما بين يناير 1778 حتى الثانى عشر من إبريل من العام نفسه, وترجمة هذه الجولات والتعليق عليها من ناحية الظروف التى أحاطت بكتابتها ومن ناحية موضوعها ومغزاها ومن ناحية أهميتها كعمل أدبى هو ما أعرض له فى هذا البحث.
لما كانت "أحلام يقظة جوال منفرد" أخر ما كتب روسو فى حياته تتصل إتصالاً وثيقاً بهذه الحياة وتبين عن نواحى نفسية الكاتب الكبير بما فيها من قوة و ضعف, من بساطة و تناقض, وهى خلاصة خمسة و ستين عاماً قضاها بين مد وجزر يتأرجح بين السعادة و الشقاء, يتذوق حلاوة الإسقرار حيناً و يتشرد ضارباً فى الأرض أحياناً كثيرة, تسلط عليه أضواء الشهرة و المجد مرة وسياط الإضطهاد و الإذلال مرات, فقد وجدت لزاماً على, إذ أقدم للقارئ العربى هذا المؤلف مترجماً إلى اللغة العربية, أن نستعرض معه مراحل صاحبها المختلفة بحلوها و مرها, بما تخللها من أحداث شكلت ذاته وتركت إنطباعاتها غائرة فى نفسه عميقة الاثر وبما أنتج خلالها من كتابات هى وليدة تلك الإنطباعات وتلك النفس.
