قال "جراد جريند" في نفسه: "يا لهؤلاء الأشقياء! إنهم لم يذهبوا إلى المدرسة ظهر اليوم، سوف أقترب منهم، ربما عرفتهم..".
وبالفعل عرف منهم اثنين على الفور.. ابنته "لويزا" وأخوها "توماس الصغير".. فصاح جراد جريند مناديًا عليهما في حدة:
لويزا! توماس!
فاستدار بسرعة وجهان صغيران تكسوهما حمرة الخجل.. نظرت لويزا لأبيها في تحدي صبياني بينما لم يرفع "توماس" رأسه من الأرض لشدة خوفه، وصرخ السيد "جراد جريند":
إنني. لم أفاجأ في حياتي إلى هذه الدرجة من قبل.. ماذا تفعلان هنا؟!.
فأجابت لويزا بنبرة فيها تحدي:
كنا نود أن نرى كيف يكون السيرك؟
كيف يكون؟!.. سيرك؟!
نعم يا أبي!
خيم الحزن والأسف، على وجهي الطفلين، خاصة لويزا، وإن كان هناك بريق ينبعث من عينيها بريق غير مستقر، كان بهما نارًا جائعة.. عجيبة.. تريد أن تبقي على نفسها مشتعلة بغير وقود يحترق!
