ألحت على فكرة كتابة هذا الكتاب تدريجيا خلال عدد من السنوات، حتى سيطرت على الفكرة تماما عند قيامى بالعديد من المهام الأكاديمية. ففى عام 1938 عالجت جزءاً من الموضوع فى محاضرات عن "اللغة والصدق" بجامعة أكسفورد، وشكلت تلك المحاضرات أساساً لحلقات نقاش بجامعة شيكاغو للعام الدراسى 1938 -1940، وبجامعة كليفورنيا فى لوس أنجلوس للعام الدراسى 1939 -1940، وقد ساهمت المناقشات التى دارت فيها مساهمة كبيرة فى تعميق إدراكى للمشاكل المتعلقة بالموضوع والتقليل من الاهتمام الذى أوليته فى الأصل للجوانب اللغوية للموضوع.
وقد قمت خلال صيف عام 1940 بإعداد محاضرات ويليام جيمس، وكانت جزءاً من المادة المتراكمة، وجزءاً من إعادة النظر فى الموضوع بكامله، وكما سيتضح للقارئ، فإننى فيما يتعلق بطريقة العرض سيجد أننى متعاطف مع الإيجابيين المنطقيين أكثر من أية مدرسة أخرى، ولكننى اختلف عنهم رغم ذلك فى أننى أولى أهمية أكبر مما يفعلون لأعمال بيركلى وهيوم، ومن الجدير هنا أن أقرر أن هذا الكتاب هو نتاج لمحاولة الجمع بين نظرة عامة مطابقة لنظرة هيوم والطرق الأخرى التى نتجت من المنطق الحديث.
