كانت أسطورة سيزيف، بالنسبة لألبير كامو، فكرة راح يتتبعها في كتاب، الثائر، وهي تهدف إلى حل مشكلة الانتحار، كما يحاول "الثائر" أن يحل مشكلة القتل، وفي الحالتين، بدون مساعدة القيم الدائمة التي هي، ربما مؤقتاً، غير موجودة أو مشوهة في أوربا اليوم. إن الموضوع الأساسي في أسطورة سيزيف، هو هذا: من المشروع والضروري التساؤل عما إذا كان للحياة معنى، وهكذا فمن المشروع أن نواجه فكرة الانتحار وجهاً لوجه. والجواب، الذي يكمن في، ويلوح عبر المتناقضات التي تغطيه، هو هذا: حتى إذا لم يؤمن المرء بالله، فإن الانتحار غير مشروع. إن هذا الكتاب الذي ألفه كامو في عام 1940، خلال الكوارث الفرنسية والأوربية يبين أنه، حتى ضمن حدود العدمية، من السهل إيجاد الوسيلة للمضي إلى ما وراء العدمية، ويقول كامو بأنه وفي الكتب التي ألفها منذ ذلك الحين حاول تتبع هذا الاتجاه، وبالرغم من أن أسطورة سيزيف تتناول المشاكل الغائية، فإن هذا الكتاب يلخص نفسه باعتباره دعوة سهلة إلى العيش والخلق حتى وسط الصحراء.
