يحيي هذا الكتاب عالماً يصعب تخيله من الشخصيات الفنية الجذابة. إنه نص غنائي وجميل الصنعة، يبلغ أحياناً درجات عالية من الصراحة بقدر ما هو، في الآن ذاته، حميم ومرح. ويكشف إدوارد سعيد فيه دقائق ماضيه الشخصي، ويستعرض لنا الأفراد الذين كوّنوا شخصيته ومكّنوه من أن ينتصر ليصبح واحداً من أبرز مثقفي عصرنا. وبعبارات أخرى... فإن الكتاب هو قصة استثنائية عن المنفى وسرد لارتحالات عديدة واحتفال بماضٍ لن يستعاد. عام 1991، تلقى إدوارد سعيد تشخيصاً طبياً مبرماً أقنعه بضرورة أن يُخَلّف سجلاً عن المكان الذي ولد وأمضى طفولته فيه. في هذه المذكرات، يعيد إدوارد سعيد اكتشاف المشهد العربي لسنواته الأولى: "أماكن عديدة زالت، وأشخاص عديدون لم يعودوا على قيد الحياة... باختصار، إنه عالم قد اندثر" فقد طرأت على ذلك المشهد تحولات عديدة إذ تحوّلت فلسطين إلى إسرائيل وانقلب لبنان رأساً على عقب بعد عشرين سنة من الحروب الأهلية، وزالت مصر الملك فاروق الكولونيالية إلى غير عودة عام 1952. وأخيراً وليس آخراً إن الجديد في "إدوارد سعيد" المركّب الذي يظهر من خلال هذه الصفحات، هو عربي أدّت ثقافته الغربية إلى توكيد أصوله العربية، وأن تلك الثقافة (كما يقول إدوارد في مقدمة الكتاب)، إذ تلقي الشك على الفكرة القائلة بالهوية الأحادية، تفتح الآفاق الرحبة أمام الحوار بين الثقافات.
