لم تحمل الطائرات في الحروب أعلام الدول التي صنعتها أو امتلكتها فحسب، بل حملت أحيانًا رجالًا جاءت بهم الحرب من أوطان أخرى، فعبروا الحدود والبحار ليقاتلوا تحت سماء لم يولدوا تحتها. بعضهم غادر وطنًا ما يزال قائمًا، مدفوعًا بفكرة أو موقف أخلاقي سبق قرار حكومته؛ وبعضهم وصل إلى المعركة بعدما احتُل وطنه وضاعت مطاراته وتفرقت وحداته؛ وبعضهم حمل اسم بلاده إلى جبهة بعيدة، ليقول إن سقوط الأرض لا يعني سقوط إرادة أبنائها.
في السماء لا تكفي الخريطة وحدها لتحديد معنى الوطن. فقد تقلع الطائرة من قاعدة أجنبية، وتحمل شارات قوة جوية ليست قوة طيارها الأصلية، وتتلقى أوامرها بلغة لم ينشأ عليها، لكنها تظل في نظره وسيلةً للدفاع عن قضية يعتقد أنها تمس وطنه أو تمس العالم الذي يريد أن يعود إليه.
ومن هنا نشأت تشكيلات جوية لم تكن علاقتها بالحرب علاقة جغرافية مباشرة. لم يكن طياروها دائمًا يدافعون عن المدن التي أقلعوا منها، ولم تكن أسرهم تنتظرهم قرب القواعد التي عملوا فيها. كانت المسافات تفصل بين المدرج والبيت، وبين الزي العسكري والهوية الوطنية، وبين الدولة التي توفر الطائرة والوطن الذي يسكن ذاكرة مَن يقودها.
