هي رواية نفسية تشويقية تدور أحداثها بين الواقع والعالم الرقمي، وتستعرض صراع الإنسان مع الحقيقة، الذاكرة، والهوية.
تبدأ القصة بـ أدريان بلاك، ضابط تحقيق سابق يعيش في فيينا، تنقلب حياته عندما يُستدعى للتحقيق في قضية تتعلق بمشروع علمي سري يُدعى MIRROR، كان يهدف إلى تطوير نظام يمكنه قراءة وتحفيز الوعي البشري باستخدام المرايا والذكاء الاصطناعي.
خلال رحلته، يكتشف أدريان أنه ليس مجرد محقق، بل أحد النماذج الناتجة عن تجربة بشرية فاشلة، صنعت منه نسخة ممسوحة من ذاكرة أصل بشري مجهول. وبينما يلاحق الخيوط، يلتقي بـ إيفا، امرأة غامضة ترتبط بالمشروع منذ بداياته، وتتمتع بقدرة فريدة على التنقل بين طبقات الوعي. تنقذه مرارًا، ثم تكشف له أنهما مرتبطان منذ البداية، وأنه خُلق ليكمل ما بدأته.
تتعمق الرواية في الطبقات الذهنية لأدريان، فيدخل عالمًا داخليًا مليئًا بالذكريات الممزقة والانعكاسات البشرية غير المكتملة. هناك، يواجه ظلًّا من ذاته، ويضطر إلى اتخاذ القرار الأصعب: أن يختار هويته بإرادته، لا ببرمجة صنعته.
فيما يحاول أصدقاؤه كارلا وليام إنقاذه من الغرق في النظام، تنشأ بينهما علاقة متينة تنتهي بخطوبتهما. وعندما تنهار الطبقة الأخيرة داخل MIRROR، يقوم أدريان بمحاولة خطرة لاستعادة إيفا من العالم الرقمي، باستخدام تقنية محفوفة بالمخاطر.
ورغم التدخل العسكري السري لإسكات المشروع نهائيًا، ينجح أدريان في إعادتِها بجسد جديد، لتبدأ حياتها الحقيقية للمرة الأولى.
تنتهي الرواية بزواجهما في حفل بسيط وسط جبال الألب، بعد أن انتصر كلٌ منهما على نفسه، وكتبا النهاية بيديهما، في عالم يختلط فيه الظل بالنور، لكن الباب… لم يُغلق أبدًا.
