يعتبر هذا الكتاب دراسة تاريخية للدولة الأموية الشرقية في بلاد الشام، وعاصمتها دمشق، وصولًا إلى الدولة الأموية الغربية في الأندلس، وعاصمتها قرطبة. يردُ فيه على بعض هذا الشُبهات التي أثارها خصوم الأمويين حول دولة خلافتهم، بالإضافة إلى استعراض بعض الصور المشرقة في تاريخ هذه الدولة العظيمة، مستوحياً فكرته من صدر بيت شعر لأحمد شوقي يقول فيه: "لولا دمشق لما كانت طليطلة"، أي لولا السلطان الأموي القوي الذي كان مقره في دمشق عاصمة الخلافة الأموية، لما فتحت طليطلة، أول بلاد الأندلس خضعت لسلطان دمشق.
