هذا الكتاب بحث علمي يلتزم بصرامة الأبحاث الأكاديمية وفق خطوات يعمل فيها على إبراز فكرة الغائية وما يتعلق بها في الفلسفة اليونانية ، ورغم صعوبة التنقل في أروقة متعددة من جوانب البحث الفلسفي في آن واحد، إلا أن أمرا كهذا ليس مستحيلا أبدا، وربما لا تكمن صعوبته في سعة الأرضية البحثية لتلك الجوانب وحسب، بل وفي إمكانية العثور على موضوع يجمع تلك الجوانب جميعها في كل واحد. ولعل موضوع هذا الكتاب ملائم جدا لغرض كهذا؛ وقد دفعني ذلك الهاجس الخفي الذي يحدوه الأمل في إمكانية التحرك حول أكثر موضوعات الفلسفة أصالة، وأعني بها (الميتافيزيقا، والفلسفة الطبيعية، والفلسفة العملية)؛ وقد تركز البحث على إبراز فكرة الغائية وما يتعلق بها في الفلسفة اليونانية، لذلك لم يكن تحديدنا لأرسطو كأنموذج لهذا البحث تقييدا لنا، بقدر ما كان محاولة منا لإيجاد جذور هذه الفكرة في الفلسفة السابقة على أرسطو وصولا إلى تحديدها الاصطلاحي عند هذا الأخير، والذي لم يكن مستغرقا لكل ما سبقه من معان تشير إليها هذه الفكرة بشكل واضح؛ كما جاء في ثنايا الكتاب. ووجود هذه الفكرة رغم عدم صراحته في تلك المرحلة؛ أمر ممكن – رغم صعوبته – وبشهادة أرسطو ذاته.
