الكتاب عبارة عن نتائج دراسة قام بها الكاتب في اطار اعداد رسالة الدكتوراه بجامعة الجزائر 2 وتركزت اساسا على دراسة المدن الصحراوية والتي تشغل مساحة معتبرة من اجمالي المساحة الوطنية ، اين تطرق الكاتب الى مقاربة المفهوم والتاسيس له من خلال البحث في التشكل التاريخي لهذه المدن والتي لم تنفصل عن المنظومة العمرانية الملازمة لها والمتمثلة في النظام الواحي الذي عرفته المنطقة ، وهو نظام تشكل المدن الصحراوية احدى عناصره ، كما تطرق الكاتب الى الديناميكية الحضرية المتسارعة التي شهدتها هذه المدن ولاسيما خلال العقود الاخيرة وماافرزه من تغيرات على نستويات متعددة .
