كان ويليام فولكنر أستاذًا في القصة القصيرة. معظم القطع في هذه المجموعة مأخوذة من أعظم فترة في حياته الكتابية، وهي الخمسة عشر عامًا أو نحو ذلك بدءًا من عام 1929، عندما نشر قصة الصوت والغضب . ليستكشف العديد من الموضوعات الموجودة في الروايات ويبرز شخصيات من حياة بلدة صغيرة في ولاية ميسيسيبي والتي تنفرد بها فولكنر. ففي "وردة لإيميلي"، أول قصصه التي ظهرت في مجلة وطنية، يروي راوي بسيط وجار قصة حب وخيانة وقتل. و تظهر العائلة الشريرة في ثلاثية Snopes في Barn Burning، حيث تدور أحداث الفيلم حول رد فعل الابن على أنشطة والده الذي أشعل النار. وجيسون وكادي كومبسون، وهما ساكنان آخران في مقاطعة يوكناباتوفا الأسطورية التي يعيش فيها فوكنر،و شاهدان على ترويع مغسلة سوداء حامل في فيلم "تلك الشمس المسائية". هذه القصص وغيرها التي تم جمعها هنا تشهد على حقيقة أن فوكنر، كما أشار رالف إليسون على نحو مناسب، "بانه أعظم فنان أنتجه الجنوب".
