القصص المنشورة في هذا الكتاب كتبت عام 1883 وكما يقول المؤلف في المقدمة: هذا الكتاب الصغير، المكتوب للكبار، يتحدث دائمًا عن الأطفال في قصصه. إنهم أطفال حقيقيون: لم أحلم بهم، بل ظهروا لي في واقعهم. لقد عاشوا معي سنة، دقيقة، يوم، ساعة، بوجوه شاحبة أو خدود ملونة، بأجساد صغيرة نحيفة أو ممتلئة، و فساتين صغيرة من الساتان أو خرق ظاهر فيها الجلد - وقد كانوا مخلوقات ساذجة ومدروسة في بعض الأحيان، رائعة ووحشية، حلوة ولاذعة فى احيان أخرى.
