مقدمة:
المقامر هي رواية قصيرة كتبها فيودور دوستويفسكي حول مدرس شاب يعمل في توظيف جنرال روسي ثري سابقًا. تدور الأحداث في فندق وكازينو في إحدى المدن الألمانية، ويعكس موضوع القمار تجربة دوستويفسكي الخاصة في الإدمان على لعبة الروليت . وقد أكمل دوستويفسكي الرواية عام 1866 بموجب موعد نهائي صارم لسداد ديون القمار.
فقد قامر دوستويفسكي لأول مرة على الطاولات في فيسبادن عام 1863. منذ ذلك الوقت وحتى عام 1871، عندما هدأ شغفه بالمقامرة، لعب في بادن بادن وهومبورج وساكسون ليه باين بشكل متكرر، وغالبًا ما يبدأ بـ الفوز بمبلغ صغير من المال وخسارة الكثير في النهاية. و يذكر لأول مرة اهتمامه بالمقامرة في رسالة أرسلها إلى أخت زوجته الأولى في 1 سبتمبر 1863 حيث يصف فيها نجاحه الأول:
