من المعروف أن التبادلات الثقافية والتكامل الحضاري بين الحضارة العربية والصينية حدثت عبر آلاف السنين؛ إذ تحاورت الحضارتان في العديد من المحطات التاريخية منذ العصور القديمة، ومرورًا بالعصر الإسلامي، ثم العصر الحديث والمعاصر، وفي سياق هذا الحوار، أُثريت ثقافتنا العربية بالمعرفة الصينية في أوائل العصر الإسلامي، واتسعت آفاق العرب أكثر وأكثر مع مرور الوقت؛ وبذلك أظهر العرب اهتمامًا متزايدًا بالصين؛ وإن لم يُسمَّ بعلم الصينيات في الأدبيات العربية، ولكن المعرفة العربية التي تكونت عن الصين في بداية العصر الإسلامي هي علم الصينيات بعينه.
وما دام العرب والمسلمون هم أول مَن أورد معلومات تدور حول المعرفة الصينية أكثر من بقية الأمم والشعوب، وفي ظل غياب الدراسات التي درست جهود العرب ودورهم، جاء هذا البحث إسهامًا في إلقاء الضوء على جهود العرب ودورهم في ميدان علم الصينيات، وتوضيحًا للاتجاه العام لعلم الصينيات العربي.
