نظم عفيف الدين قواعد العروض في أرجوزة علمية ، وقارب أساس هذا الفن بأمثلة هو صانعها، فخرج عما هو مألوف معتاد من شأن التمثيل في التراث العربي الإسلامي وعهدته، فطالما تكرر المثال الواحد في أسفار كثيرة من العلم الواحد، فأمثلة النحو هي نفسها، وأمثلة البيان والبديع ذاتها وهكذا في سائر العلوم.
وقد قسّم نظمه إلى مقدمة وفصلين وأبوابا عددَ البحور الشعرية، أي لكل بحر باب، ثمّ شرع في بيان المقصود من النّظم وأنّ غايته إحصاء الأعاريض والأضرب، وبيّن عددها الذي بلغ 34 عروضا، و63 ضربا، ولم يعتدّ بأعاريض بحر المحدث وأضربه، وإن كان قد أورده ضمن البحور المعتمدة ومثّل له.
ويلاحظ أن العفيف حاول الالتزام بسلامة التفاعيل إلا ما ندر، لذا لم يحتج إلى التذكير بكل الزحافات والعلل سوى ما اقتضته طبيعة العروض أو الضرب منهما.
ونَفَس الصوفية ماثل في ثنايا الأمثلة، ويكاد يكون مشعا في تضاعيفها، ولا غرو في ذلك إذ العفيف رأس من رؤوسهم، وشيخ من شيوخهم.
