إدوارد بيدج ميتشل: كاتبُ قصصٍ ومحرِّرٌ أمريكي، وُلِد في عام ١٨٥٢، ويُعَد من الشخصيات الرئيسية في تطوُّر أدب الخيال العلمي. وُصِف لاحقًا بأنه «العملاق المفقود في أدب الخيال العلمي الأمريكي»؛ إذ كتب الكثيرَ من قصص الخيال العلمي في الفترة الممتدة من سبعينيات القرن التاسع عشر إلى تسعينياته، وجميعها تقريبًا نُشِرت في صحيفة «ذا صن» اليومية في نيويورك، دونَ الكشف عن هُويته.
ضمَّت كتاباته العديدَ من التنبُّؤات التكنولوجية والاجتماعية التي كانت جريئةً وسابقةً لعصرها، ومن بين ذلك التدفئة الكهربائية، وتجميد البشر مؤقتًا، وآلة السَّفَر عبر الزمن، والسَّفَر بسرعةٍ أكبر من سرعة الضوء، وحق الاقتراع للنساء الأمريكيات، والتزاوُج بين الأعراق. وتشتمل قصصُه الخيالية على كلِّ ما هو غامض وغريب، بما في ذلك الأشباح، والشيطان، والماسوشية، وتحوُّل الأجسام غير الحية إلى كائناتٍ حية، وغير ذلك كثير.

لا يَخلُو العالَمُ مِنَ الخيِّرِينَ الذِينَ يَتبرَّعونَ بِثَرواتِهمُ الطَّائِلةِ مِن أَجْلِ خَيرِ البَشَرِية، يُواسُونَ المَسَاكينَ ويُساعِدُونَ المُحتاجِين. لكنَّ السَّيدَ لورين جينكس تَخيَّرَ مِن بَينِ أَبوَابِ الخَيْرِ بابًا لم يَطرُقْهُ أَحدٌ قَبْلَه؛ فَقدْ أَوصَى بمالِهِ كُلِّهِ مِن أَجْلِ افتِتَاحِ مَشفًى مُخصَّصٍ لعِلاجِ الكَذِب. يَأخُذُنا الرَّاوِي فِي رِحلةٍ مُشوِّقةٍ فِي المَشفَى؛ لِنَطَّلعَ عَلى الفَلسَفةِ الأَساسِيةِ التِي بُنيَ عَليْها، وعَلى المَراحِلِ العِلاجِيةِ التِي يَخضَعُ لهَا النُّزلاءُ الكَذَّابون، مُنذُ اللَّحْظةِ الأُولى التِي يُقِرُّونَ فِيها بِحاجَتِهم إِلى التَّخَلُّصِ مِن داءِ الكَذِب، وحتَّى بُرئِهِمُ التَّامِّ مِنه؛ لِيَعودُوا إِلى العَالَمِ الخَارِجيِّ مُواطِنينَ صَالِحِينَ، لا يَعرِفُ الكَذِبُ إِلى ألسِنَتِهم طَريقًا.
