والرواية، رواية التعلق بالطفولة والمراهقة، وحب الجمال كما التعبير عن الأحاسيس والمشاعر الإنسانية الصادقة، "وفيما هو شارد الذهن، سمع وقع أقدام فالتفت، فإذا بصديقه بول يجلس القرفصاء أمام لوحة مدفن آخر، ينظف البلاطة ويناجي صاحبه وكأنه يفشي سراً، عفوك سيدة شارموف، يبدو أنه أحداً لا يزورك، ولهذا فقبرك بحاجة للعناية، أعتذر عن عدم العناية به، لأني كنت مشغولاً بالاهتمام بصديق أحب شبح امرأة، وإذا بالشبح يصبح حقيقة، وتتحول قصة الحب إلى مأساة عاطفية".
