يتسبب الروتين اليومي في المدينة وضغوط العمل في هروب الكاتب الهاوي، الذي يعمل بجد في المكتبة العامة، من واقعه ليعيش في عالم خيالي، حيث يحيا مع العديد من الهلوسات الليلية والأحلام العجيبة. وفي سبيل التنفيس عن إحساسه باللاجدوى بسبب عزلته الاجتماعية، يحدث أن يعاوده الحنين لهوايته القديمة فيفكر في كتابة روايته الأولى طلبًا للشهرة والأضواء، بعد أن انقطع طويلاً عن ممارسة الكتابة والاكتفاء بالقراءة بين الفينة والأخرى. وبعد كتابة فصول من روايته البكر، يكتشف أن ما كتبه كان جزءًا من هلوساته وأنه لم يكتب شيئًا في واقع الأمر.
