كتاب أدب رسائل يحكي قصة شاعر من جنوب اليمن تزوّج من فتاة من شمال اليمن، جمع بينهما حب خالص للوطن والوحدة الوطنية. كانت قصائده الوطنية الملهِمة سببًا في تعلقها به، فتجاوزت معه كل الحواجز وتحدّت القيود حتى تحقق زواجهما، بعد محاولات شتى لإقناع أهلها.
لكن، وبعد مرور شهر ونصف من زواجهما، يبدأ أهل قريتها بإيغار صدر والدها عليه، زاعمين أنه يدعو إلى ما يبغضونه – أي الوحدة – فيثور الأب ويطرده من الشمال بأكمله.
وفي الجنوب، لم يكن له مأوى، فقد تبرأ منه أهله مسبقًا للسبب ذاته. وهكذا يجد نفسه منفيًا خارج الوطن.
في المنفى، يتعرّف على شاب نبيل يتعاطف مع قصته، ويعرض أن يكون وسيطًا بينه وبين زوجته، فينقل الرسائل بينهما سرًا، بذكاء لا يثير الشبهات. تستمر هذه المراسلات لعامين تقريبًا حتى يُكتشف أمر الرسول ويُقبض عليه، ويبقى مصير الزوجين وطفلهما الذي وُلد بعيدًا عن أبيه مجهولًا، معلقًا في ظلال المنفى والحنين.
