تتناول رواية "هَدْم" للروائي توم كريستينسن حياة شاعر وصحفي معروف، يعمل في أكبر الصحف الدنماركية، يعيش حياة مسقرّة، بدخل ثابت، وعائلة، وأطفال، وشقَّةِ راقية، قرّر فجأة أن يهدم حياته.
هذا القرار، كما سوف نرى، يتجاوز طابع التّمرّد الشخصي إلى إضطرابات مرحلة زمنية كاملة.
تدور أحداث الرواية في فترة من تاريخ الدنمارك، جرى فيها الكثير من المتغيّرات سياسياً وإقتصادياً وإجتماعياً، وهي الفترة ما بين الحربَيْن الضائع، وظهرت إنعكاساته واضحة عبر فصول الرواية متمثّلة في إستعراض دقيق ممتع لإيقاع المدينة، ونبضها، في مرحلة أواخر العشرينيات.
إن البطل الذي يدير أسئلته، ويتفحّصها، يواصلها نحو الحدود الوجودية كالأبدية، والخلود، بيد أنه يعود بها إلى الواقع الإنساني الفعلي، متسائلاً إن كان اتّباع الرغبات، بممارسة الجنس وشرب الكحول والإنغماس بالملذّات هو الطريق نحو الأبدية؟... وما القِيَم الأخلاَقية؟...
هذه المشاغل الذهنية التي اهتمّ بها الروائي توم كَريستينسن في روايته هذه لم تكن غريبة عن إهتماماتِ الجيل الذي عاش الدمار، ولازمه الشّكَ في المُثُل العليا بعد حدوث إنحراف أخلاقي، خلّفتهُ الحرب العالمية الأولى.
ومن الواضح أن ما وصفه في رحلة آلام بطله كان موضوعه حَيّة عصرية وجوهرية في الأدب العالمي.
