بعضهم أيضاً فصل من العمل، بينما ما يزال آخرون يعملون هناك، لكن فقدانه للوظيفة لم يكن أكثر من رمز. في النهاية وقعوا جميعاً في الشرك، الذي نصبوه لهم كيلا يهربوا أبداً من القرية، ولكي يهزموهم، حيلة مموهة بوظيفة، لا تكاد تكفي كل يطمئنوا أحلامهم. ومع ذلك كانوا يشعرون في تلك الليلة بالأمان والسعادة. كانت لونتانانثا في تلك الليلة جثة لا مكان للفشل فيها. سيبدأ أمارو، بعد أن يطلب مشروباً للجميع، رواية تفاصيل طرده وسيضحك الجميع حين يحكي لهم أنه وقع كل الأوراق التي وضعوها أمامه ما دام انه كان سيأخذ مغلف النقود، سيتحدثون عن الخونة، في بعض نهايات الأسبوع الى بيت سكناهم الدائم، الذي يسمونه الآن بالبيت الريفي، تعساء، جبناء، هكذا سيقولون عنهم وقد امتقعت وجوههم. حين يصبح الليل أكثر شيخوخة وتتوقف طقطقة المطر على سطح الألواح، سيقترح أمارو أن يشربوا نخب زوجته وزوجات الجميع. عندئذ وبين صيحات الموافقة وجمل العاشقين سيفتحون محافظهم ليخرجوا صوراً مضى عليها عشرون عاماً، من أعوام الأمل، لأنه ما من أحد منهم سيفكر حتى بنخب النساء العريضات والمملات في كل مرة أكثر، اللواتي تركوهن في البيت.
