تدور أحداث الرواية حول فتاة كويتية تقيم الإسلام وتعاليمه، يفاجئها والدها وهي في العشرين من عمرها بأن لها أماً أمريكية وقد توفيت، والآن يطلب جداها الأمريكيين رؤيتها، فتذهب الفتاة للتعرف إليهما والإقامة معهما فترة من الزمن، وخلال إقامة الفتاة في أمريكا تتعرف على قيم المجتمع الأمريكي، وتُعرف هي بدورها جداها ومن يحيط بهم من أقرباء وأصدقاء.
ماذا يعني الإسلام بالإيثار والمحبة وبرّ الوالدين والمرأة ودورها في الإسلام، وأن ما تقوم به هذه الفتاة من رعاية وحنان لجديها هو ما يأمرها بها دينها، وأن الإسلام هدفه هو خلق مجتمع فاضل بعيداً عن الأنانية والفردية وحب الذات.
لقد أجادت الروائية في تعاطيها مع الواقعين العربي المسلم، والغربي المختلف دينياً بمفاهيمه المجتمعية وممارساته مع الآخرين عن واقع المجتمع المسلم من خلال نقده وتعريته وتفكيكه، وبذلك تكون الكتابة عند "سعاد الولايتي" تمارس فعلاً تغييراً...
