في هذه الرواية الفاتنة وبالرغم من أنها رواية سياسية، وتطرحُ فترة دامية زاخرة بالمذابح والانتهاكات الإنسانية، إلا أن الكاتبة نجحت في انتزاعها من الجفاف السياسي والبرود الأيديولوجي بأن تناولتها من وجهة النظر الإجتماعية والإنسانية، والأجملأن كل أحداث الرواية تقريباً جاءت على لسان صبي صغير خادم أسود، ومن خلال عينيه اللتين تريان ما يجري وتحاولان أن تفهما ما الذي يحدث في العالم، ولِمَا . خلا تلك الرواية بوسع القارئ غير الأفريقي أن يتلصص على ذلك العالم شديد الخصوصية لمجتمع القارة السوداء، من أساطير وطقوس وغرائبيات حتى أن الكاتبة طعّمت روايتها الإنجليزية بالعديد من الجُمل المكتوبة بالدارجة المحكية الإيبوية التي يتحدث بها سكان بيافرا من قبائل الأيبو.
