ماكس فريش (15 مايو 1911- 4 أبريل 1991) من أعظم أدباء سويسرا, وهو كاتب مسرحي وروائي، عُرف اسمه بروايته شتيلر عام 1954، كما أوجدت له كلا من روايتيه هومو فابر وماين نامه زي جانتنباين (اسمي جانتنباين) مكانة متميزة ككاتب نثري. تعرف على الأديب الألماني الكبير برتولت بريشت مما كان له أثر كبير في حياته.

"مونتاوك" رواية سير ذاتية للكاتب النموسي ماكس فريش، يشير عنوانها إلى اسم المكان الذي قضى فيه الراوي / الكاتب عطلة نهاية الأسبوع مع أميركية شابة، وهناك قرر أن يقص ما عاشه كسيرة ذاتية، من دون أن يخترع أشخاصاً آخرين، فقط أحداثاً خاصة به وحده.
وهكذا وعبر هذه العلاقة العاطفية التي نشأت بين ماكس فريش والشابة التي وظفتها دار النشر الأميركية لمرافقة الكاتب المسن خلال رحلته الأميركية يسترجع فريش علاقاته الغرامية والزوجية طوال حياته، مُقدماً سيرة ذاتية جزئية مفرطة في صراحتها وقسوتها، وهو ما تشير إليه المقاطع التي يتحدث فيها عن علاقته بالشاعرة النمساوية إنغبورغ باخمان التي انتحرت محترقة في شقتها في روما.
في "مونتاوك" يُعبر فريش عن هوس الكتابة لأجل الكتابة، وخاصة كتابة جمل على (الآلة الكاتبة)، وهو الهوس الذي يعترف به ويدفعه إلى إستخدام حياته وحياة الآخرين كموضوع لأعماله، إلى الحد الذي جعل زوجته تصرخ في وجهه قائلة "لم أعش معك كمادة لأدبك"، وتطلب الطلاق منه.
يذكر أن: ماكس فريش (1911- 1991) كان له تأثيراً كبيراً في الوسط الأدبي والمسرحي في ألمانيا وسويسرا له أعمال شهيرة، مثل "أندورا" و"بيدرمان ومشعلو الحرائق" و"هومو فابر" و"مونتاوك" وغيرها من مسرحيات ويوميات...
"...هو إذن اسم المكان الصغير حيث قرر بالأمس أن يقص نهاية الأسبوع هذه: كسيرة ذاتية، نعم كسيرة ذاتية، دون أن يخترع أشخاصاً، دون أن يخترع أحداثاً تكون أكثر دلالة على واقعه الشخصي، دون الهروب إلى الخيال. دون أن يبرر كتابته بالمسؤولية تجاه المجتمع، دون رسالة. ليس لديه رسالة ويحيا رغم ذلك. إنه يرغب أن يقص فحسب (دون أن يراعي مشاعر كل هؤلاء الذين يذكرهم باسمائهم): حياته".
