يبدو عنوانًا غريبا، لكنه الأنسب للحالة التي تتخلل الرواية في تأرجح بين اليأس والأمل، فالكاتب هنا - رغم قتامة العنوان - يبث في نفوسنا الأمل تدور أحداثها في دولة خيالية، شعبها وحكامها وواقعها وأحداثها تتشابه مع أمثالها في مصر، لكن دون تتطابق.
تدور أحداث القصة بشكل متوازي بين موظف كادح - وفاسد أيضا - من جهة (إبراهيم)، ومن الجهة الأخرى رئيس جمهورية طاغية (جلال). حياة إبراهيم أشبه بحياة الملايين من أبناء الطبقة المتوسطة الدنيا، لا تختلف عنها سوى في حبه العميق لزوجته الشمس التي تمثل بالنسبة له مصدر إلهام في حياته اليومية. تتشابك الأحداث، وتتسبب "شمس" في أن يلتقي مصير البطلين، بالصدام تارة ثم بالحوار تارة أخرى.
من أجواء الرواية: "هكذا يرى الناس الحياه من على أرض بلادنا: مجرد خيوط متشابكة، يبحثون من خلالها على ثغره ينفذون منها، فلا يجدون… منهم من يبحث عنها فى خطب المشايخ.. ومنهم من يبحث عنها فى قصه حياه جيفارا.. ومنهم من يبحث عنها فى كتاب هتلر.. بل وأغلبهم قد يأس من البحث عن تلك الثغرة، ووفر جهده للبحث عن قطعه خبز فى سله مهملات، او فى جيوب الآخرين.. هذه هى بلادنا
