يتتبع مؤلف هذا الكتاب الطرق الصوفية ويبين لنا أصلها ومصادرهم ووسائلهم، ومرادهم من التصوف وغاية ما ينتهون إليه، والبدع التي تنشأ من ذلك، ولم يكن له قصد في التعرض إلى أحد من الصالحين إذا نقل عنه ما لم ينسب إليه مما يتشدق به الصوفية، وقد بين المؤلف كذلك مناهج الصوفية وذلك استنادًا إلى كتبهم ومن ألسنة أصحابهم وبين فيه أقوال علماء السلف الصالح رضي الله عنهم، ورجع إلى ماكان عليه النبي وأصحابه رضي الله عنهم وفي هذا الخير كله. وكل ذلك لغرض واحد وهو تنقية العقيدة الإسلامية والتعلق بالله رب العالمين وإخلاص التوحيد له وحده وترك التعلق بالمخلوقين والغلو فيهم.
