كان الكتاب الضخم يستقر في قلب المكتبة، على رف أعلاه غبار كثيف يوحي بأن أحدًا لم يجرؤ على لمسه منذ عقود. غلافه من جلد داكن متشقق، تتخلله نقوش باهتة لا تنتمي تمامًا إلى أي لغة مألوفة، وكأنها حروف نصف منسية. لم يحمل عنوانًا، بل مجرد رمز غامض محفور بعمق في منتصف الغلاف، أشبه بعين تحدق من زمن سحيق.
عند فتحه، تفوح رائحة قديمة، خليط بين رطوبة الحجر وبرودة الحديد، وتتكشف صفحات صفراء باهتة، كتب عليها بحبر يميل إلى السواد الغامق، وكأن الحروف رُسمت بدم جاف. النصوص بدت في البداية مبعثرة وغير مترابطة، لكنها كانت تلمع أحيانًا بضوء خافت حين تُقرأ بعين متفحصة، كما لو كانت تكشف عن طبقات خفية من المعنى لا تُدرك إلا لمن يعرف كيف ينظر.
