كانوا أربعة أصدقاء، ينحدرون من قرية واحدة، وينتسبون إلى طبقات إجتماعية مختلفة، جمعتهم، مقاعد الدراسة، وحب الفن، وفرقتهم، الطموحات والأيام. "نحن الشلة الخاصة الذين جئنا من كل الجهات، لنلتقي في مدرسة واحدة، فتجمعنا ليلة حميمة جداً، بداية رائعة ستوثق بيننا عُرى الصداقة، توجهنا لحضور الموسيقار العربي الكبير حنفي، وكان معروفاً بأنه أحد أهم العازفين، وكنا نشاهد صورته دائماً، يعزف في تخت المغنية الراحلة الشهيرة السيدة / أم كلثوم ...".
وفي الرواية يبدأ الكاتب بروي حكاية كل واحد من الأصدقاء الأربعة، إلا أن الحكاية الرئيسية تتمحور حول (ناجي) الذي التحق بكلية الفنون الجميلة في القاهرة، وبدأ بدراسة الفن على أصوله في معهد الموسيقى. وعلى هامش هذه الحكاية الرئيسية، تبدأ حكايات الأصدقاء الأربعة، تتناسل، وقد تتداخل، وقد تتقاطع، وقد ينطوي بعضها على بعض، وقد تتجزأ في شبكة من العلاقات متنوعة، وعلى قدر من التشابك والتعقيد، والكاتب هنا هو جامع الحكايات ومنسقها ومخرجها، وهو يبدو على وعي تام بما يفعل، حيث يتأرجح السرد بين بدايات السبعينيات، ليعود في النهاية إلى أحداث تمر بها المنطقة العربية اليوم، في إشارة إلى انخراط الشباب في أعمال جهادية، وهو ما يقوم به إبن (ناجي) الشخصية الرئيسية في العمل في قناعة منه أنه يغسل ذنوبه "سامحني على كل ما فعلت، أرجوك لا تندم، فقد عبرت الحدود السورية، أنا في طريقي إلى الجبهة للجهاد ...". بهذا الخطاب قدم أحمد الدويحي نصاً روائياً عميقاً، يروي حكاية أجيال، فيجمع بين الماضي والحاضر، ويثبت مرة أخرى أنه روائي ماهر.
