ميشيل زيفاكو: كاتب ولد في جزيرة كورسيكا الفرنسية. التحق في البداية بمدرسة داخلية، ثم أكمل تعليمه الجامعي فحصل على البكالوريوس عام ١٨٧٨م. أسس مجلة «جيوكس» الأسبوعية، وكان يحمل ميولًا ثورية راديكالية، فكان يكتب في الصحف الثورية المختلفة، ليدعو إلى الثورة ضد الدين في نهاية القرن التاسع عشر، الأمر الذي أدى لسجنه. وبعد خروجه من السجن، اعتزل السياسة وتفرغ للأدب، فأخرج العديد من الروايات. وتوفي بسبب السرطان عام ١٩١٨م مخلفًا وراءه تراثًا أدبيًّا فريدًا من نوعه.

تبدأ حوادث هذه الرواية في كلكوتا عاصمة الهند سنة 1757، فقد كان السير روبرت ويلدن سائراً على جواد عند بزوغ الفجر من شاندر ناجور إلى كلكوتا، وهو من أشراف نورمانديا، ولا يزال في مقتبل الشباب، وكان يسير بين الأشجار والحقول وهو يناجي نفسه فيقول: إن الشريف لا يحنث بما وعد، وقد عدتُ تلك المنكودة الحسناء اللادي سيسلي - زوجة اللورد سبيرتهون حاكم الهند - أن أخلصها من اخيه السير جاك الأحدب.
