يعرف "ستيرنبرج" (Sternberg, 2003) الذكاء الناجح على أنه القدرة على النجاح في الحياة وفق معايير الفرد، وخلال السياق الثقافي الاجتماعي له، من خلال إدراكه لنواحي القوة والضعف، وتبنيه لبيئة يمكن تشكيلها والتكيف معها باستخدام المهارات العملية والتحليلية والإبداعية، حيث تظهر القدرات التحليلية عند قيام الفرد بفهم المشكلات التي يتعرض لها ويقوم بحلها، بينما تظهر القدرات الإبداعية عندما يحاول الفرد التكيف بشكل متكرر مع المشكلات الجديدة وما يستجد حوله من مواقف، بينما تظهر القدرات العملية عندما يقوم الفرد بتطبيق القدرات التحليلية والإبداعية في حل المشكلات والاستفادة منها. وهذا المقياس يستخدم في التعرف على تلك المهارات العملية والتحليلية والإبداعية لدى الطلاب.
