معروف أن السنة النبوية لها مكانة كبيرة وعظيمة إذ هي وحي وهي ثاني مصادر التشريع، وقد قيض الله لها رجالًا لا تلهيهم تجارة ولا بيع عن ذكر الله شمروا عن ساعدهم الجد بلا كلل ولا مملل، وارتحلوا في البلاد شرقًا وغربًا لتحصيل الأسانيد وجمع الطرق للنظر في الأحاديث وتبيين صحيحها من سقيمها، ومن هنا وردت الحاجة في معرفة الرواة وألقابهم حتى لا يختلط على أحد من طلاب العلم اللقب والاسم فيجعل من ذكر في موضع باسمه وفي آخر بلقبه شخصين.
ويقول المؤلف الشيخ الإمام الحافظ أبو الفضل محمد بن طاهر بن علي المقدسي رحمه الله: فإني رأيت كتابًا لأبي بكر أحمد بن عبد الرحمن بن أحمد الشيرازي رحمه الله في ألقاب المحدثين ما يستغنى المحدث عن كونه عنده، ولم أجد من يرويه فاختصرت منه على ذكر الأسماء دون إيراد أحاديثهم حكاياتهم إذ كان ذلك هو المقصود من هذا الكتاب.
