هذا الكتاب هو سيرة ذاتية ومذكرات كتبها أستاذ التاريخ بجامعة القاهرة رؤوف عباس، يحكي لنا بأسلوبه الأدبي الممتع، وعباراته السلسة والسهلة، رحلته وكفاحه في الحياة حيث ولد في حيّ فقير، وعانى كثيرًا من شظف العيش، وأصر والده أن يعمل ويترك التعليم وأصر هو على العكس، فاضطر للتوفيق بين الأمرين وعمل أثناء فترة التعليم فيحكي لنا عن تعليمه والمراحل التي مر بها وكفاحه فيه حتى وصل إلى المرتبة التي طالما حلم بها حيث استطاع أن يعمل مدرسًا في الجامعة، وفي الكتاب تأريخ مهم للجامعة ووصف وتحليل جيد للتحولات الاجتماعية التي شهدتها هذه الجامعة، وللظروف التي أحاطت بها، وكيف كانت منظومة التعليم وكيف تحولت، وكان الكاتب يتمتع بصراحة كبيرة وجرأة أكبر، فقد تحدث عن فترة السادات وما شهدته الجامعة في هذه الفترة من انحلال وانهيار. ولكن في ظل كل هذا يسرد لنا آلامه وخيبة أمله في هذا المجال وفي بيئة الجامعة التي لا ابداع فيها، وهذا الكتاب يوثق العديد من المقالات لكبار الأدباء والمفكرين حول سيرة هذا الرجل.
