في منتصف ظهيرة يوم السبت، الأول من مايو عام 1915، أبحرت سفينة فاخرة عابرة للمحيطات مبتعدة عن الرصيف 54 بضفة مانهاتن من نهر هدسون وانطلقت إلى ليفربول، بإنجلترا. لا شك أن بعض الركاب البالغ عددهم 1959 وأفراد طاقم السفينة البريطانية الضخمة شعروا بقليل من القلق - رغم أن ذلك لم يكن بسبب الأمواج بقدر ما كان بسبب تلك الفترة.

أبحرت السفينة في المحيط الأطلسي لخمسة أيام خالية من الأحداث. لكن في يوم 6 مايو، عندما انطلقت السفينة الضخمة في اتجاه ساحل أيرلندا، تلقى تيرنر رسالة مفادها أن الغواصات الألمانية، أو U-boats، كانت تتجول في المنطقة. سرعان ما غادر غرفة القبطان وتمركز على الجسر ليمسح الأفق وليستعد لاتخاذ قرارات سريعة.
