موضع الجمال من الموضوعات التي شغلت الفكر الإنساني منذ عهد أفلاطون إلى اليوم، ورغم هذا لم يتوصل الباحثون والمفكرون والفلاسفة إلى حقيقته فمن قائل بذاتية، ومن قائل بموضوعيته. ومن قائل بعلاقة الجمال بالنفع، ومن قائل بنفي هذه العلاقة فالفن للفن لا للحياة. وهكذا من النقيض إلى النقيض.
هذا الوضع هو الذي جعل عالماً كالدكتور أحمد فؤاد الأهواني يقول عنه "إن هذا العلم حديث الميلاد لم يشب بعد عن الطوق فضلاً عن صعوبة إخضاعه للمناهج العلمية"، بل جعل ديكارت لا يعترف بوجوده لأنه غير قابل للقياس.
وهذا يعني أن هنالك مشكلة. وأن هنالك دعوة ضمنية لحلها. وقد اخذ الدكتور عووضه في هذا الكتاب يحاول الحل بمنهج يعتمد على الملاحظة وإعمال الفكر بجانب الاستعانة بالتراث العالمي منذ عهد أفلاطون إلى كروتشيه. وبه توصل إلى مفهوم علمي محدد للجمال يجيب على أي سؤال عنه وعن علاقاته المتداخلة بالخير والحق... دون أي شذوذ يعتذر عنه بعبارة "لكل قاعدة شواذ" كل هذا في أسلوب سهل أقرب ما يكون إلى لغة الحياة اليومية، رغم معالجته لقضايا علمية عويصة، وفلسفة معقدة.
لهذا قال بعض ممن أطلعوا على هذا الكتاب قبل أن يطبع: أن هذا الكتاب يعد إضافة حقيقية في مجال فلسفة الجمال والفن والأدب. وقال البعض: بل ستكون له مكانة خاصة في التراث العلمي والأدبي.
