صاحب هذه القصص هو القاص غلام حسين ساعدي (1935-1985) ولد في آذار بيجان. ودرس الطب في جامعة طهران ولكنه اختار طريق الأدب، بدأ بنشر كتاباته الأولى سنة 1953م. وفي الستينات كانت قد ذاعت شهرته كاتباً مسرحياً يكتب اسمه المستعار (جوهر مراد). والأجواء المخيفة التي تضغي على واقعية ساعدي طابعاً رمزياً، تتجلى بقوة في مجموعة قصصه المترابطة معاً (مآثم) التي هي بين يدي القارئ، وانتظار نزول البلاء يشكل الحدث في هذه القصص.
تدور آثار (غلام حسين ساعدي) حول الفقر؛ الخارجي والداخلي، وتجري أحداث قصصه في ثلاثة ميادين رئيسية: الأول: بنادر جنوب إيران، ذلك الأقليم الجاف الفقير بأراضيه المحلية وخرافاته. والثاني ريف أذربيجان، ووحداته الاقتصادية الصغيرة المريضة، وأذهان أهله المسكونة بالأوهام والعلل. والثالث: المدينة الكبيرة بمفكريها ومثقفيها، بمستشفياتها وعمالها وعاطليها عن العمل.
والصفة الغالبة على هذه الميادين الثلاثة هي الفقر والجنون والجهل بين طبقات أفرادها المختلفة. إن واقعية (ساعدي) مجبولة بطعم الوهم والخوف، والبساطة التقريرية الأصيلة هي الصفة المميزة لنثره.
