يَعرِفُ القارِئُ ما كانَ فِي حَياةِ «عَميدِ الأَدبِ العَربيِّ» مِن كِفاحٍ وجِهادٍ مُنذُ طُفولتِه؛ فظُروفُه لمْ تَكُنْ بِالمِثالِيةِ أبدًا، وبِخاصَّةٍ مَعَ حِرمانِهِ مِن نِعْمةِ البَصَر. وقَدْ حَكى فِي كِتابِه الشَّهيرِ «الأيَّام» كَيفَ كانَ إِصرارُه ودَأبُه فِي طَلبِ العِلمِ يَفُوقانِ أَقرانَه مِنَ المُبصِرِين؛ فلمْ يَكتَفِ بتَعلِيمِه الأَزهَريِّ عَلى مَا كانَ فِيهِ مِن مَشاقَّ، بَلِ التَحقَ ﺑ «الجَامِعةِ المِصرِيةِ» النَّاشِئة، وأهَّلَهُ تَفوُّقُه لمُواصَلةِ التَّعلُّم ﺑ «السُّوربُون» فِي فَرنْسا. ولمْ يَكدْ يَحصُلُ عَلى دَرجةِ «الدُّكتُورَاه» حتَّى عادَ إِلَى وَطنِه لِيَبدَأَ مَرحَلةً جَدِيدةً مِنَ النِّضالِ والكِفَاح؛ حَيثُ أَصبحَ مَهمُومًا أَكثرَ بِقَضايَا وَطنِه واسْتِقلالِه، فاخْتارَ أَنْ يَكونَ إِسهَامُه بِالكَلِمةِ والفِكرَةِ وتَعلِيمِ أَبناءِ وَطنِه؛ فَقضِيةُ التَّعلِيمِ ظَلَّتْ لآخِرِ يَومٍ فِي حَياتِهِ قَضِيةً كُبرَى لَا يَسبِقُها شَيء، فَهُو يَراهُ السَّبِيلَ الوَحِيدةَ لتَحقِيقِ نَهضةٍ وَطنِيةٍ حَقيقِيةٍ عَلى أُسسٍ ثَابِتة. «مَا بَعدَ الأَيَّام» يَستَكمِلُ قِصةَ كِفاحِ رجُلٍ أَلِفَ الصِّعابَ واسْتَعذَبَ تَحدِّيَها؛ إِنَّه «طه حسين».
