توالت هجمات الصليبيين على بلاد الشام وما جاورها طيلة قرنين من الزمان. وقد أرخ لتلك الفترة مؤرخون ثقات منهم عز الدين بن الأثير الجزري الذي عاش بين عامي 555 – 630 هـ في كتابه الكامل في التأريخ. ونظرًا للشبه الكبير بين الظروف التي كانت سائدة في تلك الفترة والوضع الحالي فقد اختير من هذا الكتاب نصوص خلال حقبتين من الزمن. أولاهما امتدت من بدء أولى الهجمات الصليبية وانتهت باحتلال بيت المقدس. والفترة الثانية امتدت من احتلال بيت المقدس إلى حين تحريره من قبضة الصليبيين وبعد ذلك بسنين قليلة لحين وفاة صلاح الدين الأيوبي رحمه الله.
سميت هذه المجموعة من المقتبسات من كتاب الكامل لإبن الأثير بعنوان " ما أشبه اليوم بالبارحة" . واللبيب المتتبع لأخبار الأمة اليوم سيجد في كل حادثة من الحوادث المدرجة هنا ما يشبهها مما يقع في عالم اليوم وكأن التأريخ يعيد نفسه والعاقل من اعتبر بالتأريخ فلا يكرر أخطاءه ويأخذ العبرة والعظة من ذلك.
