عشرة أعوام عشتها مع الأستاذ الدكتور علي الوردي كانت بمثابة مئة عام, فقد عايشته تاريخا ممتداً, تحدث فيه معي عن طفولته, شبابه ودراسته, ودخوله العراق كفاتح علمي أراد نقل المجتمع البدوي إلى مجتمع مدني يحكمه القانون في أوائل الخمسينات, حدثني عن تحوله الفكري في بيروت حين ذهب لدراسة البكالوريوس, بعد أن كان قبلها بسنين يقف في الحضرة الكاظمية شاعرا مفوها في المناسبات الدينية, ثم انتقالته الفكرية الأخطر حين دخل جامعة تكساس لنيل الماجستير والدكتوراه, وكيف أن رئيس الجامعة انتدبه لينيب عنه بإلقاء محاضرة في جامعة نيويورك, كرمه على أثرها عمدة نيويورك آنذاك, حدثني كيف عاش وتعايش مع الأنظمة السياسية المتعاقبة على العراق.
شاءت الأقدار أن أرافقه أيام مرضه الأخيرة, حين أصيب بسرطان المرارة الذي أدى لوفاته, خططت شخصيا لعلاجه خارج العراق ونجحت ولله الحمد بمساعدة بعض الأخوة لنقله إلى الأردن للعلاج, وسوف أورد قصة علاجه في هذا الكتاب, لكن لسوء الحظ كان المرض قد استشرى في كل جسمه, فعاد الوردي إلى العراق بعد إجراء عملية فاشلة في عمان, يقضي آخر أيامه في بيته بالأعظمية حتى وافته المنية.
