أظنني أحببت تمراست في اللحظة نفسها التي لا حت لي فيها المدينة من وراء نافذة الظائرة. ما إن غادرنا الجزائر العاصمة حتى بدأنا نحلق فوق القمر، لم نكن نرى على امتداد كيلومترات إلا الأرض الرملية الجرداء القاحلة، أرض رمال وحجارة وصخور يرتسم فيها الطريق المستقيم الذي تسلكه سيارات الجيب والشاحنات والقوافل مثل ثلم خطه ظفر. بدأت في الحال أفتقد صور الأشجار والحقول الخصبة والانهار المتعرجة.خل سأتحمل المسير لمدة أسبوعين في الصحراء؟ كنت اخشى العراء والامكنة المتحجرة، والهواء الخالي من حبوب الطلع، والطبيعة التي لاتعرف الفصول. هل كان ذلك لأني كنت أنظر من السماء بإزدراء فأرى تلك الأرض فقيرة؟ كانت بين الفينة والأخرى تلوح لنا واحة، أولفيف من الأشجارة الخضر يختلط فيها النخيل والتين والتمور حول مرتفع من الأرض،فأهمس منفعلاً حينذاك "تمنراست" لكن جاري في المقعد كان يصحح لي :هذه"غردايا" أو الغوليا" قلعة المائة فاكهة، أو "عين صلاح". ثم لا تفتأ الرتابة تعود من جديد لستحوذ على الأصقاع الساكنة.
